Best Affordable Treadmill: A Review of the Weslo Cadence G 5.9i

The pursuit of health can be expensive     Image Source

Let’s face it.

Sometimes it feels like staying healthy is a serious drain on your wallet.  You know you need to eat right and exercise, but it’s not always easy to make your health a priority.

Even if you love your gym membership, trail running, or just strolling around the neighborhood, sometimes you just can’t get out of the house to work out.

With the rising costs of healthcare, it’s more important than ever to make an investment in your health.  You don’t need a heavy duty treadmill for every day workouts, but it sure would be nice to have a treadmill to use when time or weather doesn’t allow a trip out of the house.

Maybe you are just beginning a walking or jogging routine, and you don’t feel ready to commit to an expensive treadmill.  It can be difficult to start working out when you aren’t sure what type of equipment is exactly right for you.

Or, if you are like me, you want to build a home gym but you are short on money and space, and you need to start NOW. Most cheap treadmills are still priced over $500, and that can put a serious dent in your budget. It can feel discouraging to see how pricey home gym equipment can get. And some of us just don’t have room for a dedicated workout space.

Whatever the reason, you may be wondering,

What affordable treadmill should I buy?

The answer?

Who should buy the Weslo Cadence G 5.9i?

  • Walkers looking for a low impact workout
  • Beginning Joggers under 5’7”
  • Infrequent users or as a backup for inclement weather
  • Buyers of average height and weight
  • Buyers looking for an affordable treadmill
  • Buyers looking for a compact treadmill
  • Buyers who do not want to commit to a more expensive machine
  • Buyers who want basic, easy-to-use features

Who Should NOT Buy?

However, if you are a serious runner, have specific needs for training, or weigh more than the limit (275 pounds) we do NOT recommend this machine.  The platform measures 50” long by 16” wide, therefore we do not recommend that very tall people use this machine.  We also do not recommend this treadmill for full-out running.  If you are looking for equipment with all the bells and whistles, there are better mid and high-tier machines out there for you.

Benefits

Features

If you’re not the type to fuss over fancy features like video integration, programs and training you’ll never use, or add-on features like cooling fans that will break, then this is the machine you want.

The construction is mostly plastic, which is to be expected at this price, but overall the durability of this machine is equal to that of some mid-tier treadmills.  With the Cadence G 5.9i you don’t have to wait until you’ve saved for a more expensive machine.  You can begin to work toward your fitness goals right away, which is a huge plus for this affordable treadmill.

The deck is designed with a unique cushioning system to relieve stress on joints and allow for a low-impact workout.  A blue-tinted LCD display shows 4 basic functions: calories burned, time elapsed, distance, and MPH.

There are 6 preset personal training programs: 3 for fat burning and 3 for intensity workouts.  The speed is temporarily adjustable up or down within the presets so that you can customize your training without resetting the program.  10 speeds are available outside of the presets and are adjustable up or down while you are moving.

The console also features a convenient built-in thumb heart rate monitor.  Just place your thumb over the sensor for a quick reading to track your workout progress.

2 deep wells on the console can hold water bottles and the integrated tablet holder is designed to hold your phone, tablet or other device while you walk or run.

Easy assembly, generally less than an hour to set up is another perk of this machine, although it is recommended that you have someone to help you.

Price

If budget is your primary concern, this is your machine.

There are few quality choices at this price point.  It’s just not possible to find a durable treadmill that will keep going forever in the budget-friendly arena.  However, Weslo offers a 1, 2 or 3 year extended service plan for the Cadence G 5.9i, which we highly recommend on lower priced models like this one.

Do NOT pay for extras if all you need are a few presets and a heartrate monitor.  A basic treadmill like the Cadence G 5.9i gets the job done without a lot of bells and whistles.  We love that this machine is accessible to almost anyone.

You can move forward with your fitness goals without breaking the bank.

Obviously we don’t recommend going into debt for fitness equipment, because debt causes stress, and chronic stress will completely derail your health and fitness goals!

Size

If space is your primary concern, this is one of the smallest treadmills on the market.

This machine not only folds, it also has wheels on the bottom for easy transport into a corner, closet or storage area.

The unfolded dimensions are 65” long x 29” wide, much smaller than a more expensive machine’s footprint.  When folded, the Weslo Cadence G 5.9i has a compact 29” x 24” footprint.

Keep in mind that the small size means a very small platform.  A standard platform is at least 55” long, which would leave enough room for a tall person to run.  The Cadence G 5.9i is 5 inches shorter, and therefore not ideal for full-out running.

The Bottom Line

If you are an infrequent user or are just starting out, the Weslo Cadence G 5.9i treadmill is a basic, budget-friendly machine to begin a fitness routine with.  If you are looking for a light-duty machine that will get the job done,  or you need backup for bad weather days or when you can’t get to a gym, this is an affordable treadmill to add to your home gym.

At this price point we believe this machine is a steal, and we recommend this model over other budget machines that offer less in terms of durability and features.  And the best part?  Nothing will stand in the way of your health goals so you can stay on track!
